Giving into White BREAD

Okay so, for the first time in perhaps, my a- hem- life, I bought white bread. I know that it is half sugar and I know it most likely is nothing but empty calories with little to no nutritional value- HOWEVER- Isaac will eat any sandwich and any thing I put on it now. Its like candy! Should I just give in and buy white bread from now on or should I tough it out and continue to insist on wheat?

What do you let your kids eat?

What kind of food do your kids like?

Isn't there a white looking bread that is whole grain? Cheryl used to walk to Nisson's and buy her own white bread while the rest of the Smith kids ate homemade whole wheat - although it was probably more 1/2 wheat and 1/2 white. Look for whole wheat pasta - Isaac won't know the difference. Mom Smith

I say do the white bread, but try to find one that is better than the old cheap stuff...but then again, he is just a kid. Our parents grew up on that stuff and they turned out just fine. I'm all about trying to get them to eat what they like, but then again, my son doesn't eat anything. I say do you what you feel is right for your kids.

Bryan says !No Bueno! Doesn't Isaac know that it going straight to his thighs??

He should just stick to low-glycemic index foods like fruit juice, smarties, instant oatmeal, and granola bars.

Since corn is healthy for you, I would look for things high in corn-syrup. This is better for you than sugar from sugar cane. I would also recommend Corn Pops, and Frosted Flakes (corn based). I think section 89 says something about grain being good for you...

Caffine-free Diet Coke is good in between meals, and don't you know... Licorice is fat-free!! (Do dentists endorse licorice? What about thumb sucking?)

I alternate. One loaf white, one loaf wheat. I'm just as bad as the kids about liking white bread. You know what they say....the whiter the bread, the sooner you're dead.

My kids are cool with the wheat bread, but we've been doing it from the beginning, so they don't really know the difference. Lydi loves macaroni & hot dogs, and Emma only like fruits and veggies, so I obviously am not a good one to ask. Haha, oh the joys.

Bueno advice Vego Bryan, but you've got to round it out with processed proteins: hot dogs, chicken nuggets and lunch meat. I put the processed-pro's on wheat bread and buns - then I don't have to use a plate cuz the kids eat everything off the bread. Bonus, No dishes! ;)

My kids started on white bread, but now I only buy wheat. I bought a cheaper wheat bread to start out (so it would have the same kind of feel/taste as white bread). Maybe he'd eat a cheaper wheat bread??

I created a bread recipe that my kids love! I has some white flour, some oat flour (put oatmeal in the blender!), some rolled oats, and a little bit of coarsely ground wheat (almost like cracked wheat-this way, you don't have as much of the wheat taste, but nice texture from the chewy wheat berries). The oats and oat flour add moisture, a slightly sweet flavor, and give the bread a very light texture. Whole grain, but you can't even tell!!! It is sweetened with honey and holds together great for sandwiches. Let me know if you'd like to try it. I can bring over a loaf next time I make some. By the way, this is soo easy to make. I mix the dry ingredients ahead of time in gallon bags. So when I feel like fresh bread, I just put water, honey and yeast in my kitchen aid mixer, add the dry ingredients, and let the mixer do the work. Carter usually eats half of the loaf before Kevin gets home, so I have doubled the recipe!
Other foods my boys love: avocados plain or on sandwiches, banana slices with almond butter on each one, chicken salad (canned chicken mayo and tiny diced celery) sandwiches, spinach or lettuce torn or cut into 1/4 inch pieces and hidden between two slices of lunch meat (I use sliced turkey usually). I could go on and on. Good luck!

Yeah, I say do the whitewheat bread. Nya really likes it--doesn't know that I am sneaking fiber into her diet. She never notices whole wheat spaghetti or brown rice, but bread is a little tricker. I say keep him healthy, quite honestly a lot of "whole wheat" bread doesn't have as much fiber as the whitewheat ones do. You have to read the labels. OK, I've said too much, but then again, my daughter likes edamame, salmon, chicken, pork...pretty much anything I make her (which is all healthy whether or not she knows it--even my homemade pizza is half whole wheat.)
